Financial Assistance

There are several alternative sources of financial aid available to students of the program.

Financial assistance from within the Department is considered at the time of application review; a separate application for departmental financial assistance is not necessary. Because we have such an active research program, most students in the department receive financial aid in the form of research assistantships. Selection for assistantships is competitive. These positions involve part-time work, usually from 10 to 20 hours a week, with faculty supervision. Students receive an hourly wage plus a partial tuition waiver. In addition, during their required professional internship experience, students are typically paid by the host agency.

The Financial Aid Office of the University of Florida also offers a full range of student loan and work-study programs, as well as additional assistance on a competitive basis to minorities, women in “non-traditional” fields, and students with outstanding academic backgrounds. University of Florida also offers Graduate Fellowships for graduate and PhD students.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning has several scholarships and awards which are presented to outstanding students in the program. These include the Carl Feiss Urban and Environmental Design Award, the Kanavos Award, the Rydberg Award, the Raynal Award, the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Outstanding Student Award, and the WRS Infrastructure and Environment Inc. Award in Memoriam of Mario Ripol. In addition, the Judith Mucci Scholarship awarded by the Orlando Metro Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA) and the Sun Coast Section of FAPA both offer annual scholarships for eligible incoming students.
