What You Can Do
While many people do not think their everyday actions have an impact on the environment, the reality is that every choice we make affects the planet in some way. It is possible to make a difference in your daily lives to live more sustainably.
Students: In the Studio
- Use 100% Post-Consumer Recycled Paper. Save 5 lbs. of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.
- Buy Minimally Packaged Goods. Save 1,200 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Buy Local Produce. Reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to the store.
- Bring Re-Usable Containers for all Beverages and Meals
- Unplug Un-Used Electronics. Even when electronics are turned off, they use energy. Save over 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Donate materials. Give scrap materials to friends or try to re-use them before they get tossed in the trash.
- Turn Off the Lights Every Night.
Professors: In the Classroom
- Turn Off Your Computer. Conserve energy by using your computer’s “sleep mode” instead of a screen saver.
- Go digital. Save paper and ink by posting syllabus and class information electronically.
- Plan for Sustainability. Introduce themes of sustainability into class assignments to encourage new behaviors.
Everyone: At Home
- Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs. Save 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Change Your Air Filter Monthly. Save 800 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Fill the Dishwasher Completely. Running with a full load saves 100 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Adjust Your Thermostat. Save 2000 lbs of carbon dioxide per year.
- Take Shorter Showers. Save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Bring Cloth Bags to the Market. It reduces waste and does not require any additional energy.
- Walk or ride your bike instead of using a car.
- Separate and recycle plastics and papers.
