About . . .Mary Ryan Mary Ryan is John Martin Vincent Professor of American History at Johns Hopkins. She has been plowing, for many years, two intersecting fields: Gender History and Urban Studies. The author of 6 books including Civic Wars: Democracy and Public Life in the Nineteenth Century City and most recently, Mysteries of Sex: Tracing Women and Men through American History, she has been conducting a research tour of her favorite urban sites: 19th century city halls, the plazas of California and the monuments of Baltimore.
