LAA 6941 - Supervised Internship

Field Experience
General
The student will gain real world experience through the employment in a private/public sector office under the direction and guidance of a registered landscape architect.
Objectives
To understand the professional practice of Landscape Architecture--learning
by practical experience.
Performance
The criteria are as follows:
- The student should work for or be supervised by a registered landscape architect for a minimum period of 60 working days. If the office does not have a registered landscape architect, the student must work in the role of a landscape architect, document his/her work and have it reviewed on a monthly basis by a registered landscape architect or faculty member.
- Each student must be able to summarize his/her work experience. This will include a description of the types of project(s) and duties performed, his/her role in the office or on the design team, and an evaluation of the office experience and the firm as a place of internship.
- The supervising registered landscape architect (or other responsible supervisor or faculty member in the absence of a registered landscape architect) must write a brief overview of the student’s responsibilities which includes an evaluation of the student’s efforts (strengths and weaknesses). This letter should also identify the dates the student was employed.
- Upon completion of the internship, the student should register for the course in the fall semester and submit the following:
- a letter from your employer, (plus the required letter from the supervising registered landscape architect) on firm letterhead stating the conditions of your employment as described above; This letter is to be sent to: Professor. - a synopsis page with the critical information about the employer; and
- a one page (maximum) synopsis of your internship. In your letter, you should describe the types of project(s) you worked on, the type of duties you performed within the office, your role in the overall office or design team, and your evaluation of the office experience and this firm as a place of internship. This can be sent or e-mailed to grist@ufl.edu.
- a PowerPoint ä portfolio minimum (12 slides) that documents the work and projects worked on during the internship period on CD or zip disk.
In turn, the Department will write the employer after the internship period, to inquire of their experience with the summer internship program and the student’s abilities and skills.
