LAA 4941c - Extended Internship with Landscape Architect

General
The student will gain real world experience in landscape architectural project design, construction document production, project presentations and landscape construction through the employment in a pre-selected and participating private / public sector office under the direction and guidance of a registered landscape architects.

Objectives
To understand the professional practice of Landscape Architecture--learning by practical experience.

Performance
Students registered in this course are offered full summer and fall semester employment in a pre-screened professional office. The criteria for the completion are as follows:

The student should work for or be supervised by a registered landscape architect for a combined period of Summer C and Fall semesters or five months in total. The student will work in the role of a landscape architect, must have documented his work and it must have been reviewed on a monthly basis, by a registered landscape architect.

The supervising registered landscape architect (and if appropriate, other responsible supervisor or faculty member in the case where the student works in an office which does not have a registered landscape architect) must write a brief overview of the student’s responsibilities which includes an evaluation of the student’s efforts ( strengths and weaknesses). This letter should also identify the dates the student was employed. In addition the student must submit the following:

  1. a letter from your employer, (plus the required letter from the supervising registered landscape architect) on firm letterhead stating the conditions of your employment as described above; This letter is to be sent to:Professor.   2. a synopsis page with the critical information about the employer; and
  3. a one page (maximum) synopsis of your internship. In your letter, you should describe the types of project(s) you worked on, the type of duties you performed within the office, your role in the overall office or design team, and your evaluation of the office experience and this firm as a place of internship. This can be sent or e-mailed to grist@ufl.edu.
  4. a PowerPoint ä portfolio minimum (12 slides) that documents the work and projects worked on during the internship period on CD or zip disk.

In turn, the Department will visit and / or write the employer, after the extended intern period, to inquire of their experience with the summer internship program and with regard to the student’s abilities and skills learned at the University of Florida.
