LAA 4940 - Internship with Landscape Architect
3 credits Field Experience

Note: May be repeated with a change in content up to a maximum of 6 credits.

General
The student will gain real world experience through the employment in a private / public sector office under the direction and guidance of a registered landscape architects.

Objectives
To understand the professional practice of Landscape Architecture--learning by practical experience.

Performance
For students registered in this course, the criteria for the summer internship are as follows:

The student should work for or be supervised by a registered landscape architect for a minimum period of 60 days in total. If the office did not have a registered landscape architect, the student must have worked in the role of a landscape architect, must have documented his work and it must have been reviewed on a monthly basis by a landscape architect or faculty member.

Each student must have kept a daily log documenting work experiences or be able to summarize the experience. Upon the student’s return to the University of Florida, the documentation will be submitted for review and evaluation by the course faculty member.

The supervising registered landscape architect (and if appropriate, other responsible supervisor or faculty member in the case where the student works in an office which does not have a registered landscape architect) must write a brief overview of the student’s responsibilities which includes an evaluation of the student’s efforts ( strengths and weaknesses). This letter should also identify the dates the student was employed.

The student should submit the full name(s), title, registration #(s) and state, address and telephone & fax #’s for the registered landscape architect (or his supervisor and the supervising landscape architect or faculty member).

The student upon completion of the internship should submit for credit:

  1. a letter from your employer, (plus the required letter from the supervising registered landscape architect) on firm letterhead stating the conditions of your employment as described above; This letter is to be sent to:Professor.   2. a synopsis page with the critical information about the employer; and
  3. a one page (maximum) synopsis of your internship. In your letter, you should describe the types of project(s) you worked on, the type of duties you performed within the office, your role in the overall office or design team, and your evaluation of the office experience and this firm as a place of internship. This can be sent or e-mailed to grist@ufl.edu.
  4. a PowerPoint ä portfolio minimum (12 slides) that documents the work and projects worked on during the internship period on CD or zip disk.

In turn, the Department will write the employer, after the intern period, to inquire of their experience with the summer internship program and with regard to the student’s abilities and skills learned at the University of Florida.
