Study Preservation for Professional Continuing Education or College Credit on Historic Nantucket Island

Program
The Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N) was founded in 1972 as a cooperative effort between the University of Florida and the community of Nantucket, to provide student participants with a truly unique educational experience in a broad range of historic preservation issues, while helping to research and document the historic environment of the island. Over the last quarter century more than 500 students from more than 100 academic institutions in the US and abroad have participated in the summer program in historic preservation. PI:N has evolved into a Nantucket based center for historic preservation studies, sponsoring research, public presentations, seminars, exhibitions, professional continuing education programs and workshops throughout the year in addition to the academic summer programs. Many PI:N graduates and faculty hold key positions in the field of preservation, and PI:N project documentation of numerous Nantucket cultural resources are accessible at the Nantucket Historical Association Research Library on island.

Curriculum
Historic preservation is interdisciplinary in theory and practice. Each year sixteen students are selected for PI:N from many diverse geographic, educational and professional backgrounds including law, architecture, interior design, construction, planning, landscape architecture, history, American studies, fine arts, engineering and other preservation related fields of study. Course work is project oriented involving real problems in the Nantucket community. The academic curriculum includes: historic preservation theory and practice; graphic and photographic archival documentation of Nantucket buildings and sites under HABS/HAER conventions and guidelines; and research and analysis of historic cultural resources using National Park Service Historic Structure Report process and methodology. Lectures, studio projects, field documentation and research are augmented by an off-island field trip to historic Newport, RI and New Bedford. Students earn nine graduate level credit hours through the University of Florida School of Architecture. Transfer of credits should be arranged through the student's own university program.
Faculty
Classes are taught by UF preservation studies faculty, the resident PI:N faculty/administrator and a graduate program assistant all actively engaged in historic preservation education, research or practice. They are supported by over thirty visiting faculty and speakers representing a diverse spectrum of the historic preservation field including: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning professionals; preservation consultants; local, state and federal agencies such as HABS/HAER and the National Park Service; community organizations; the preservation academic community and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Photography workshops are taught by UF faculty and the head of architectural photography for the Historic American Building Survey.
