Superior students can earn both the bachelor's and master's degree in a shorter time than typically would be possible. Undergraduate students who wish to enroll in graduate-level courses for a master's degree have an opportunity to do so through a combined degree program.
Normally, students who meet the combined degree application requirements can enroll in 12 credits of graduate courses during their junior and senior years. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning allows students to enroll in 21 credits of graduate courses. These credits will satisfy the undergraduate degree requirements and, if the student is admitted to graduate school at UF, the 12 or 21 credits also will satisfy graduate degree requirements.
The program's minimum admission requirement is a 3.2 GPA (may be higher for some programs). Admission to the corresponding graduate program requires an 1100 GRE score (may be higher for some programs).
Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Building Construction and Bachelor of Science/Master of Building Construction
The combined BS/MSBC and BS/MBC degree programs would allow qualified students to earn both degrees at an accelerated pace. Qualified students would be allowed to begin the MSBC/MBC degree course work while they are 4BC and count 12 hours of graduate BCN courses for both the BSBC and MSBC/MBC degree requirements. The MSBC/MBC degree could be completed within two semesters after completing the BSBC requirements. All BSBC requirements must be satisfied except 12 hours of designated BCN graduate courses which are used to satisfy 12 hours of BS courses and electives as well as 12 hours toward the MSBC/MBC degree. Admission criteria include: 1100 GRE; 3.4 upper-division GPA; complete all 3000-level BCN courses.
Bachelor of Design/Master of Interior Design
The 4+1 program is a combined bachelor's and master's degree program of study, which allows undergraduate students in interior design at the University of Florida to take graduate level courses prior to completion of the bachelor's degree and to count 12 graduate credits towards both degrees. If admitted, students are required to complete 6 graduate credits in the fall semester and 6 graduate credits in the spring semester of their senior year (Ietter-graded A, B+ or B). After the baccalaureate degree is awarded, students must complete an additional 24 hours of graduate credit hours consisting of coursework and a written thesis with a research component. Students should expect at least one additional year to complete the Master of Interior Design. Admission criteria include: 1100 GRE; 3.2 GPA.
Bachelor's Degree/Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning
Admission criteria inlcude: 1100 GRE; 3.2 GPA. Overlapping credits are 21 (9 of the 21 hours can be taken in home department).
Concurrent Ph.D. and Master's Degrees
Doctoral students may choose to pursue a combined degree, generally a master’s degree, concurrently with the Ph. D. studies. Careful planning and advising with the Supervisory Chair is necessary to assure the appropriateness of a selected dual degree. Completion of the dissertation is the major focus of the doctoral degree; so only when a dual degree reinforces this focus is it an appropriate choice.
