How to Become a League Certified Instructor - Apply

League Bike Ed Instructor Training Seminar
- Schedule

The requirements for becoming a Regional Trainer for the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education Program (FTBSEP) include the following:

1. Attend and complete a Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education Program training
(day and 1/2 class for teachers and/or one day class for community law enforcement officers);

2. Complete an LAB (League of American Bicyclists) "certified
Road 1" Course (9 hour course) geared toward your own personal bicycling skills and knowledge;

3. Complete "League Certified Instructor" (LCI) training (22 hour course). An "LCI" training is held once a year in Florida (prerequisite is passing Road 1 class). A written pre-test is required before the LCI course. The training focuses on both bicycling on-road skills and teaching ability, with evaluation in both areas.

4. LCI's are then mentored (by another regional trainer) through a training they
put on in their region for teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and/or community leaders.

After the above mentioned qualifications are successfully completed, the trainee is certified to become an "official" Regional Trainer for the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Education Program (FTBSEP). Regional Trainers must keep their LAB membership current and do a minimum of two trainings or presentations each year. They are responsible for lining up their own trainings in their region, and are also contacted through the FTBSEP office and FBA to assist with or put on trainings. They are reimbursed travel costs and a stipend unless it is considered already a part of their job responsibilities. They sign a "contract for training services" with the FTBSEP office (downloadable from Web site as are all requests for training forms, training agendas, flyers, and training equipment requests).

Regional trainers are the lifeblood of the statewide program. We are always looking for enthusiastic and energetic new potential trainees who want to improve their own cycling skills as well as impart their knowledge to others.

The LCI training seminar is two days and one night. The registration fee is $175 and includes the Effective Cycling book, video and Bike Ed instructor materials. All registration information and payment MUST be received at least six weeks prior to the seminar. There must be a minimum of 10 instructor candidates in each seminar.

Once you have become a League Certified Instructor, there are annual requirements for remaining certified, including:

- Keeping League membership current
- Renewing LCI status with the League once a year (renewal forms will be sent from the League office in February)
