The three-semester UF Master of Science in Architectural Studies (MSAS) program leads to a nonprofessional degree in a specialized field of architectural study. Open to applicants with a bachelor's degree in any field, it is an excellent opportunity for enhancing your educational background, professional qualifications or teaching credentials through individualized, in-depth and interdisciplinary research in specific areas under the guidance of faculty specialists. Curricula for this program are tailored on a case-by-case basis to accommodate your particular interests. Each curriculum includes a minimum of 35 credits of course work, with up to six applied toward the required Master's Thesis. Potential specializations include:
MSAS Architectural History & Theory focuses on the interpretation of architecture as historical artifact and cultural product. You can combine architecture courses with others in art, English, film studies, foreign language, history and philosophy to arrive at highly original conclusions about the reasons, motivations and meanings behind the human act of making architecture. A passion for ideas, an assertive curiosity and a voracious reading appetite are particularly well suited to this specialization.
MSAS Architectural Preservation involves the analysis, maintenance and appropriate development of culturally significant buildings, urban spaces and landscapes in the context of contemporary architectural practice. You can gain knowledge and firsthand experience in all aspects of dealing with the historic built environment (documentation and archival research, preservation technology, community revitalization and related legal/economic considerations) through courses offered at the Gainesville campus and off-campus programs in Miami , Nantucket, the Caribbean and Italy .
MSAS Building Technologies deals with applied science and technology as determining factors in architecture. You can expand your theoretical understanding and practical experience in acoustics, construction materials and methods, energy conservation, life safety and security, lighting and structures through a combination of advanced seminars, design projects and individual studies. Access to extensive laboratory and computer facilities, as well as to elective courses in allied fields outside of architecture, add to the manifold possibilities of this specialization.
Your Master of Science in Architectural Studies research culminates in a scholarly Master's Thesis culled from your in-depth research, rigorous analysis and personal interpretation of your specialization.
Admission Requirements
The
UF School of Architectures graduate admissions committee
considers applications for Fall Semester entry only. It bases
its decision on the overall strength of your application package,
rather than isolated scores or criteria. The application deadline
is February 1 of each year; all application materials must
reach UF by this date. Late applications are not necessarily
turned away, but they cannot be guaranteed priority for placement
or financial aid consideration. The committee will notify
you of its decision by letter. The mailing of these letters
is tentatively scheduled for the last week of March.
The graduate admissions committee reviews these application
materials as part of the process:
- Your undergraduate grade point average, calculated from
the last 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits) of
your bachelors degree, of which 3.00 is the expected
minimum.
- The total of your verbal and quantitative Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) scores, of which 1000 is the expected
minimum. (The analytical score is not counted.)
- Your official transcripts and credentials from all previous
higher education institutions attended.
- Three letters of recommendation from people qualified
to assess your academic performance or professional experience.
- Your letter of intent, detailing your motives and goals
in pursuing a graduate education in architecture, as well
as your intended focus or specialization.
- If you are a foreign applicant, your Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, of which 550 (paper
format) or 213 (computer format) is the expected minimum.
