Consideration is given to office practices and design project management, contract documents, associated legal aspects, marketing strategies, professional ethics, staff personnel practices, and career planning will be explored in detail. Integration of computer software for project scheduling and time management will be studies through assigned projects. A case study exploration of ethics and contracting for design services will be used.

Objectives

  • Explore interior design business firm types, their structure, modes and methods of operation and the diversity within the profession
  • Survey business documents and procedures to provide a transition from the studio/class-room to a professional design firm environment
  • Discuss business ethics and standards; how a designer secures new business; what ethical codes and practices should be used by the designer
  • Develop an understanding of the day to day operations of the design firm, to approach an understanding of management attitudes as they present themselves in a competitive market, along with a professional business vocabulary
  • Project individual professional career planning and management, professional and career advancement, continuing education for the practitioner, and the impacts of registration/licensing
