James Winebrenner, Associate Professor

3 credits (Spring)

The objective of this course is to develop a basic understanding of the creative and technical processes involved in the production of custom furniture designs. To accomplish this we will explore the interaction of aesthetic theory, contemporary culture, and technology on furniture design.

We will study joinery techniques, materials, detailing and design process. We will build technical skills while also studying the history of 20th century furniture design. This study will focus on the implications of cultural issues, materials, detailing and manufacturing processes, human form, and human interaction, on furniture design.

This course will offer students an opportunity to explore furniture design and construction. Lectures, reading, discussions and design critiques will disseminate information. Students will use this information as they engage in the two major projects that involve research, design and construction of furniture pieces.
